Save Our Strays was founded in 1998 to reduce pet overpopulation in the Cincinnati Tri-State area through non-lethal, humane methods. Inspired by national groups like Alley Cat Allies, our primary focus was initially trap-neuter-release (TNR) of feral and stray cat populations in the area. Often during our TNR efforts we come across adoptable cats and kittens who are then placed in one of our foster homes and adopted out via this website, www.petfinder.org or local Petsmart store adoption programs. In more recent years we have also started offering to the public low-cost spaying/neutering at one of the local veterinary hospitals we're partnered with. While we have fewer foster homes currently for dogs, we also will take in stray dogs or pull dogs from "death row" at high-kill shelters as often as space in our foster homes allows.

We do not have a shelter. All of our cats and dogs are housed in loving, regular homes with families.

We are all-volunteer and non-profit. All of the money we take in goes directly into the care of the animals.

We are NO KILL. We do not euthanize for space or monetary concerns. The ONLY time we euthanize an animal is under the advice of a veterinarian for health reasons.

We will take in stray animals from the public when space is available in one of our foster homes. Because we commit to every animal for as long as it takes for them to find a permanent home though, our foster homes are usually full and every animal must go on our waiting list prior to being admitted to our program. If you are willing and able to foster the animal in your own home, we will help you to find them a home by listing them on our website and/or allowing them to attend our adoption events (providing they have received all required vet care). To ensure the health of our animals, we follow strict guidelines recommended by our veterinarians regarding an animal's attendance at our adoption events. Certain quarantine periods must be met, certain testing/immunizations/procedures must have been performed and documentation must be available. If you're interested in bringing an animal to one of our events, contact us for further details.

We ALWAYS desperately need foster homes. Since we don't have a shelter, we can only rescue as many animals as we have space for in foster homes. Fostering is one of the most rewarding volunteer positions in animal rescue, and the only requirements are a little extra space in your home and a little extra time and love to share with an animal in need. If you choose to become a foster for SOS, we will provide you with training, guidance and support. We will provide for any vet care your foster animal might need, and will work with you to help find the animal a permanent home. Please let us know if you'd like more information on fostering.

TNR is still one of our primary objectives. If you have a feral or stray cat population in your neighborhood, we will be happy to assist you in getting them spayed/neutered to control the population. Removing the cats is not something we can or will normally do (unless extreme circumstances make it absolutely necessary, and providing we have a safe location to relocate them to). If the cats are simply removed, other cats will move into the territory and the cycle of breeding will begin all over again. A sterilized, maintained colony is a much better solution for everyone involved, and this is what we will help you to achieve in your neighborhood.

Every year we spay/neuter hundreds of animals, and find loving homes for hundreds of animals as well. The crisis of overpopulation persists though, in spite of the efforts of our group and others like us. Thousands of dogs and cats are euthanized every year in the Cincinnati area alone for no reason other than that there aren't enough homes for all of them. Please do your part and spay/neuter your own pets and those roaming in your neighborhood. Adopt instead of buying from a breeder or pet store and save a life.

We always have cats and kittens available for adoption at the Petsmart in Oakley off I-71 at the Ridge exit, at the Petsmart in Milford, the Petsmart in Liberty Township/Bridgewater and at the Lewis Animal Hospital off I-75 at the Galbraith exit. Every Sat from 11a-3p we have adoptathons at the Petsmart in Oakley, where we'll have our "regulars" as well as many more cats and kittens (and sometimes dogs and puppies) who need homes. Stop by and take home a new family member! If you need directions or more info, please contact us.
